The Solution:
The wreck bell was a facility of the port and port department to call the crew of the Queenscliff lifeboat in times of a sea disaster. The bell was cast by John Danks & Son, Melbourne and the supporting structure was erected here in September 1891 as it was close to the fishermen's residences, which generally formed the lifeboat crew. The wreck bell was used on many occasions to call the crew, most recently in 1974 when they were called to a fire on the ship Brisbane Trader.
Under the bell is a sign that says -
"Any person found ringing this bell except in the case of shipwreck or maritime disaster will be prosecuted".
