Yamada Dera was one of the first Buddhist temples in Japan. It was located in a very low pass on the ancient road that connected areas of the modern cities of Sakurai and Kashihara. Built in the mid-6th century, it had fallen into ruin by the 12th. Archeological excavations in the 1980's unearthed portions of cloister wall which were remarkably well preserved. This study added greatly to the understanding or early temple building techniques in Japan.Download FilePost last revised March 12, 2023.[/p]
