This sanctuary on the small island of Lanai, Hawaii, provides two important services. Feral and stray cats get to live out their lives in comfort and so do the birds of Lanai. Any invasive species is a big problem, especially on islands, and cats can greatly reduce or eliminate native birds in a short time. This sanctuary is even a tourist stop and is about 1/4 mile from the airport. You can walk or take a shuttle to visit 580 cats, plus or minus. Better yet, since about 40% of the cats eventually become human-lovers, a Lanai cat would be a great souvenir to take home to the mainland! All are spayed/neutered and immunized when they arrive at the sanctuary. The Island of Lanai has an active native species recovery program and the sanctuary is recognized as a crucial part of it. There is probably nothing that does not exist. GEC is very diverse, mostly interesting and extremely instructive. Thank you for this article. I like it!
Take care, Pitter
