"You can't go home again." But that doesn't mean we don't want to. I spend many hours in Google Earth looking at places I remember from earlier days, and one of the places where I spend the most time is the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Northeast Oregon. One of my earliest memories is when, as a lad of 4 or 5, with only sleeping bags and a tarp, my parents and I endured a night of heavy rain, one of those cloudbursts that occasionally bring torrents of rock and sand down from above to cover or wash out roads. All through my childhood, my dad and I, sometimes our whole family, would hike to the lakes above. As I got older, I grew to love backpacking, and until my parents died, nearly every visit home included several days in the Wallowas. I suppose that even if I could get back to the area, I'm now too old to shoulder a pack, but I hope someday someone can manage to haul a couple of handfuls of my powdered bone up to the top of my favorite mountain. Whether they do or not, that place will always be home, and as close to heaven as I am ever likely to get.
I made this tour for my private use. After I had recorded it, I sorted through my CD's, looking for appropriate music of a suitable length. I ripped the CD and inserted the music, and then was sufficiently pleased with the result that I wanted to share it. Getting permission to use that recording seemed hopeless, but before I gave up, I did a search for "public domain classical music downloads." I found a site called Classical Music Mobile which has a good selection of old, out of copyright recordings, available for download at 1€ each. My joy was short-lived when I discovered that the older recording was a full 53 seconds shorter than the one I had used. Getting rid of 53 seconds of tour took another two days, but I finally got it to pretty much fit. I hope someone else enjoys it as much as I do.
