In January of last year, I hastily posted in the Member-Centric Locations forum an overlay map I had made many years ago. I did it because I wanted to access it from another file I was writing at the time. Now that the old UBB system has collapsed and I have discovered that I can more conveniently upload out-of-layer content to other sites, I'm finally getting around to posting a placemark I first conceived almost 5 years ago. I'm hoping that its presence in the GEC Layer will attract users to the more complex project that does not appear there. (Thank you, CuriousJM, for teaching me about Dropbox.)
The Umami Hills Tomb Park is a large prefectural park located in the central cluster of the mostly 4th and 5th century monumental tombs in the Umami Kofun Group in Nara Prefecture, Japan. While there are numerous tombs of moderate size in the area, none are associated with historical personages by the Imperial Household Agency or (as far as I can determine) by archeologists and scholars. If anything, they may be taken as emblematic of the decentralized power during the period when they were constructed.
The park has several kofun of various sizes and styles, including one which has been substantially restored to its original appearance. The is a small but nicely appointed museum. And even without these attractions, its beautiful landscaping and the surrounding scenery would make it a delightful place to visit. Download File
