Hoover Grove Cultivated Redwood grove in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California. The oldest and largest Sequoia sempervirens here may have been planted around the 1870's. Only a few inches beneath the thin layer of topsoil is several feet of original sand dune. The trees roots anchor them and draw water, however, no seeds would likely ever germinate and survive here. When a grove of large trees such as these develops over time it creates its own micro-climate, micro environment, and ambiance. Street View reveals that the parimeter of this grove is planted with Monterey Cypress. There is another redwood grove just east of here at Strybing Arboretum. I have a post there on Taxodiaceae soil.
