KenGrok has not only made some very interesting finds but has explored his subjects in detail. Before he posted about Saharan monuments, he began this thread with:
For your Arabian Peninsula and East African archaeology enjoyment, I present:
This collection of placemarks can reveal only a fraction of the archaeological wonders of the the regions surrounding the Red Sea. It’s limited by a) the relatively low number of hi-res photos currently available for these countries and by b) my limited time to parse through them, where one photo could have potentially hundreds of objects to document.
Long Sleepless Nights
Why would I spend two weeks doing nothing else but placemarking stone structures from 8500 – 6500 B.C.? Because I got addicted to it, that’s why. When the August 2009 new imagery came out, I decided to check out just one random new photo of Saudi Arabia. I zoomed in and this is the first thing I saw:
It looked old. I was going to post it and simply wait for the community to answer (if ever) but I do that too often. I decided to be a contributor for once and started by checking for any other objects like the one I had chanced upon. I did. Firstly dozens, all situated at the peaks of hills or at the edges of plateaus. It started with these stone circles, but then I started finding other shapes. After a hundred or so objects I then started searching for knowledge about these. After a few days (not stopping to eat or drink) I learned that nobody knows much about them.
You can read the rest of this post and thread HERE in the old Google Earth Community, which is now archived. Some of the other shapes he found and an attachment are below.
Shape: Stone circles
The circle is often perfectly round. There’s always a mound in the middle. Outside of the free-for-all lava flow plains these circles are usually found on peaks and escarpments.
Shape: Stone circles with triangles
Shape: Needles
