I just wanted to add that I recognized the man because his visit to the Netherlands made a lasting impression and is still remembered here after more than 300 years. Every Dutch child learnt about him in primary school before postmodernism struck. Negative clue: The sculpture >> is not in the Netherlands though. <<

To me, it could be anyone in the world of that time. Another thing, you're saying those who found this without a clue had to know about the guy and what he did. Probably because they learned about him at school. Thank you. And lastly: I asked you if this had to do with the game of bridge, and you said: "No, but you're getting warm". Er.... what?

Well done guys. Lets give the solution, before this becomes a forum on his own ... This is the statue of Peter the Great, tsar of Russia, in the Kloosterstraat in Antwerp, Belgium. Coordinates: 51.214168° 4.394054°
"Klooster" refers to a monastery that used to be there and where he stayed during his short visit in Antwerp in 1717.
During his visit, he measured the hight of our Cathedral tower by climbing to the top and lowering a long rope.
Afterwards, he travelled to the Netherlands where he spent much more time learning about technologies to modernise his country. (E.g. he worked as a ships carpenter). That's why BP recognised him easily. He lived in Zaandam and Amsterdam.
He can be recognised because of his unusual length. (2 metres)
This, together with the Russian text, was the beginning.
The clue from the "old days" was an arrow, pointing to the left, i.e. to my avatar and location details.
The second clue for the clueless was a hand (not needed) with in the background the very big statue of Peter the Great in Moscow. (I think we had already a challenge about it)

As I wrote earlier: I recognized him after reading the first clue: a Russian visitor. First his name sprang to mind, and the sculpture itself left little doubt - that's how the ‘recognition’ worked. I agree with your second point. Knowing the guy beforehand helped tremendously in this case. Like others however, I went up and down the wrong street first. By ‘getting warm’ I meant to say that I recognized the man thanks to some distinguishing trait of mine - being Dutch, in this case. I can see your point that this wasn't much help. This clue business is an art in itself.

Now that you've given the solution, Walter, I just have to tell you how I finally found it, based on your clue. This is the most indirect and unexpected and mistaken way of using a clue, as you'll see! 1) I did not recognize the statue of Peter the Great in Moscow, with the ship and all. I wondered about the white hand, and I wondered if that was the backlot of some theme park, with a fake ship in the background. 2) I knew your blue arrow pointed to your profile and location details, but knowing the statue was in Antwerp wasn't enough for me to find it. I decided to investigate the statue visible in your photo, and learned about Brabo, the roman soldier who supposedly cut off a giant's hand. All those years of seeing that profile image, and I never realized this was a hand the statue is throwing!!! 3) And then I thought: hand cut off by Walter's statue, big hand in the clue image, with you saying "I'll give you a hand"! The hand! That must be important! And the theme park idea comes back, with the ship and the statue of what seems to be a sailor on it, a sailor, a pirate maybe? Could this be... Captain Hook? In Disneyland? But then what's the link with Russia? I don't care, let's search for that! I search for Captain hook statue ship etc. and that's when I find Peter the great's statue in Moscow! Mind blown! Completely by chance! 4) The rest was "easy", except to find the exact spot, which I already explained. That's it! Thank you for reading.

I misinterpreted this for a second because I actually lived in Zaandam for five years. They even have a small Russian quarter there, with a Czaar Peterstraat (also in Amsterdam), Czarinastraat, Golofkinstraat, Jasykoffstraat, Nicolaasstraat and Tolstoistraat.
