Meanwhile, the sign has been replaced with a readable one, and none too soon. Can you read it? Spoiler-free SV image please.

Not so hard to guess it, even for a non-native English speaker

Well deciphered, Walter, hhgygy and krenek. For those who can’t make sense of the mutilated letters, here is a spooky clue: Long (more than two hundred years) ago, a creature in a white sheet, considered by many to be a ghost, sowed panic in a neighbourhood of a large city. Citizens started patrolling the area, and one evening a civil servant thought he had spotted the ghost. He challenged, shot and killed it, after which (surprise!) the victim turned out to be an ordinary fellow citizen, dressed all in white. The body was carried to a nearby public place, where a physician pronounced the victim dead. The street sign is only half a stone’s throw from that public place, which is still there!

Well done all! The Londonist blog has a good story about the murder (referred to in the clue), which took place in the London borough of Hammersmith. The public place is the Black Lion pub on South Black Lion Lane. The name on the barely legible street sign is Hammersmith Terrace. 51.4900°N, 0.2418°W
