The Elfstedentocht (eleven cities tour) is a speed skating race, 199 km long, held in the Dutch province of Friesland, leading through the eleven ‘cities’ of that province - provided the natural ice on the canals is strong enough. It was last held in 1997.
Long distance swimmer Maarten van der Weijden, who as a 19 year old in 2001 fell ill with leukemia but survived, winning a gold medal in Peking in 2008, attempted to swim the eleven cities tour in 2018 to raise funds for cancer research, but had to break off his attempt at 163 km. This year he succeeded.
