Edit (8 June, 2015 - Eastern Australian Time): Google Maps has undergone a few changes so some of the following has changed. Updated scripts are included in "The Rest of the Clutter" further down in this post.
The question was asked in another thread about how to hide labels in new Google Maps. Hopefully, this might help.
I generally use Chrome as my browser but it has become a bloated memory hog and struggles more and more these days. As a result, when I bring up new Google Maps, behind the scenes Maps determines that my system is not up to scratch to handle the full version, including 3D imagery, so it places me in Lite mode.
Lite mode
You can tell that you are Lite mode from two sections of the screen:
1. The option to toggle from Map view is Satellite:
2. Lite mode is displayed at the bottom of the screen:
The bad news: Currently, turning off Labels is not available in Lite mode.
Full mode
If I switch to Firefox as my browser, I am not pushed into Lite mode. This time I have Earth as the option to toggle from Map view:
Clicking on the Gear/Settings icon near the bottom right of the map allows me to turn Labels on or off:
The rest of the clutter
Removing the rest of the clutter can be fiddly. There are steps in this post which describe how to remove clutter in Street View. There are also steps describing how to open the console for various browsers (required to remove clutter). It was written a year ago but is likely to still be okay.
Updated scripts (8 June, 2015):
Street View:
$(".app-viewcard-strip").style.display="none";$("#titlecard").style.display="none";$("#fineprint").style.display="none";$("#timemachine").style.display="none";$("#scale").style.display="none";$("#scale").style.display="none";$("#watermark").style.display="none";
Satellite/Earth view:
$("#omnibox-and-cards").style.display="none";$("#watermark").style.display="none";$(".app-viewcard-strip").style.display="none";$(".scene-footer").style.display="none";$(".onegoogle").style.display="none";
If you try these and something isn't cleared, please let me know the details and I'll attempt to fix it.
