View of Melas Chasma region of Mars. Melas Chasma lies along the central southern edge of the large Valles Marineris, the grand canyon of Mars. Steep cliffs drop into the rugged terrain of Melas Chasma, several kilometres below the surrounding plateau. Here is scientific evidence that volcanic activity, water, wind erosion and marsquakes may all have shaped the region. Zoom in and you can pick out some of these different features - smooth lava flows, water channels and layered deposits, fault scarps.
