How to divide a large KML file for MyMaps 2,000 POI limit?

First of all, this post was posted twice and I do apologize.  Due to this being my second post (ever) on here, I'm not totally sure where the "troubleshooting" section would be on this forum, and "tools," seemed the closest subsection.  But, as soon as I published my question under someone else's thread, I realized that this topic was not quite the same as that OP's - not the same really at all.  I also realized that this question would likely get overlooked if I didn't start a new topic, so here it is:

    In short, my plummet into the chasm of Google Despair began with those damned disappearing stars on Google Maps. After much research and perhaps a few choice words under my breath to our beloved Google, I came across a work-around in the Google Map help forum that basically allowed me to download all my Google stars in geoJSON format via Google Takeout, then convert that into KML via a third party site, and finally, open the file within GEP or MyMaps.

    Unfortunately, I ran into yet another problem. I have about 4,000 stars which translates into about 4,000 waypoints. MyMaps only allows 2,000 points per layer (and 10 layers total, but that wasn't the problem since this is all converted into one huge layer).

    I have spent many hours trying to break this file up, convert it, etc., but since I am just about as ignorant as they come when it comes to anything related to computers (almost anything), I managed to corrupt the conversion process along the way every time despite my best efforts.

    My question in a nutshell:

                   What do I need to do to be able to view a KML file with 4,000 points in Google's MyMaps without losing half of the                 waypoints due to Google's limitations on waypoint quantities?

    I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions or tips on how to do this. Please also keep the instructions at a beginner level, as my aforementioned lack of computer skills will probably make a simple process much more difficult it the instructions aren't very specific and "dumbed down," so to speak.

Let me begin by repeating what TL said, that technical questions like yours are best asked in the Help Forum.



Let me further confess that I have absolutely no experience in writing KML for Google Maps.



That being said, it doesn't seem to me that dividing your file into two smaller parts is a particularly difficult problem. I first made a second copy of your file. I then copied each into a text editor, and since you had assigned numerical id names, I deleted the second half (i.e. id's 1916 - 3830) of the placemarks and saved the remaining file as part 1. I repeated the process with the second copy, deleting the first half (i.e. id's 1 - 1915) of the placemarks, and copied it into GE as part 2. After pasting both files back into GE, I changed the icon color for both files, just to show that there were now two files. I don't know whether or not this will serve your purpose in Google Maps, but it seems to work for Google Earth.



One placemark, "Old Imperial Brewery" doesn't have an id code, and it appears in both files. I must admit that I am very curious about how you plan to use these placemarks, and why you went to the trouble of making id codes. Would you please acknowledge that you have read this reply, and share the results back here when you have completed your project.

I have several things I want to say, and I can't wait to be able to properly take a look at the files! I'm on my mobile and will have to wait till I get home, but I quickly wanted to say THANK YOU! 
I also feel pretty dumb for managing to screw up something so simple, but I'm really illiterate when it comes to anything involving software or computers in general.  I'm sure what was easy for you would have taken me hours or days to do (actually, it did take hours and I still couldn't get anywhere, despite having attempted to take the exact same steps you described regarding dividing the files).  Again.., thank you! 
I'm sorry if this wasn't the right place tor my question. I've also been actively seeking solutions in the help forum for months, which is the only way I knew I could convert my geoJSON into KML and where to do it.  I had never even heard of either file type before that time, actually. I do check the Help Forum regularly.

As requested, I'll provide an update on my original question, take a look at those two files, and answer questions as soon as I'm on a real computer! 
I hate typing/navigating on forums with mobile devices, lol.

I'm sorry that didn't work. I doubt if I can suggest anything further which might help, but as I spent an hour or so responding to your post, I'm curious about why my suggestion didn't work.



How many placemarks were dropped? Did those placemarks have id's? If so, is there a pattern in the id's of the dropped placemarks (for example, were they scattered at random throughout the file, or bunched together in sequential (a) group(s))? Is it possible that there were duplicate id's (or even duplicate placemarks?) How do you know there is missing data? Is it too much to just simply replace "by hand"? Did you repeat my procedure for yourself, or did you rely on the competence of some stranger who may well care less about your project than you do? (I left out some data myself, and when I noticed the omission, went back and pasted it in, but I may have made other mistakes that went unnoticed.)



How (and why) did the id's get in the placemarks in the first place? I've added id's to placemarks myself, and it's a tedious process, very unforgiving of errors, so I suspect you used some kind of software that added them for you. If so, do you have a copy of the file before the data was modified by adding id's? It might be worthwhile to go back to that file and try to divide it, instead. Without the id's you have to guess the halfway point in the file, but since you have a handle on that (i.e., you know the last placemark in part 1 and the first placemark in part two) you can find that point in your data, insert a bunch of carriage returns to create a gap, copy the file, then delete the top half in one and the bottom half in another.



It's possible that none of these ideas will be helpful, but at least they're a little grist for your problem solving mill.
